The Next Generation of AI Infrastructure: Inside Pennsylvania’s $10 Billion Data Centre Development
The United States continues to accelerate its investment in AI infrastructure, with large-scale data centre developments transforming the digital landscape. One of the latest examples is Project Phoenix, a new 2GW data centre campus announced by Aligned Data Centers in Shippingport, Pennsylvania.
Breaking ground in September 2026, the three-facility development is expected to anchor approximately $10 billion in regional economic investment. The project is also expected to support around 3,000 construction jobs and create approximately 640 permanent operational roles once the campus is established.
A key feature of the development is its dedicated on-site power supply, reflecting the growing importance of energy availability in delivering large-scale AI and computing infrastructure. The facilities are also designed around closed-loop cooling systems intended to minimise operational water requirements.
What does this mean for the industry?
Projects of this scale require expertise across the entire data centre lifecycle, from initial development and engineering design through to construction, commissioning and long-term operations.
Demand for experienced professionals in electrical engineering, mechanical systems, MEP, power infrastructure, cooling technology and project delivery is likely to remain an important consideration as these developments progress.
As AI workloads continue to grow, the ability to deliver reliable, scalable infrastructure will be a defining factor in the industry's next phase of expansion.
